Before you read:
The reality is that every situation here is different, whether you work in public or private schools.
- Some schools will pay you late, on time, or early.
- Some schools will go out of their way to find you a nice apartment, some won't even look at it before signing the lease.
- You will always have good and bad students, but the ratios of them will vary.
- Bosses, co-teachers, general school environments will be different from school to school.
Your best bet for getting a feel of the school is to try to get into contact with the previous foreign teacher. I asked my recruiter to ask the school for the previous foreign teacher's email address, and talking to her really set my mind at ease. She told me that the school environment was welcoming, but the teachers were shy about using English. She was also able to give me tips on how the school is run, and even how to navigate the local buses (I took over her apartment). I think that this step is doubly important when applying to a hogwan, as it seems that work environments hit greater extremes in hogwans. (It seems much more common to have contract/pay issues working for a hogwan.)
